Salam Charity signs partnership agreement with Lazismu in Indonesia
On September 28th 2018, as the people of Sulawesi got ready for evening prayers, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck in Donggala causing a massive tsunami that ripped through the coastline of Palu killing over 2000 people and injuring thousands more.
As people get to grips with the disaster and slowly start rebuilding their lives, this partnership between Salam and Lazismu becomes ever more vital. With ambitious plans to build 2000 temporary shelters, 400 communal toilets, 20 deep well drills and 5 mosques, Salam and Lazismu help over 30,000 individuals.
“I’m very excited about this partnership between Salam and Lazismu. Pinanan Pusat Muhammadiyah is one of the largest organisations in the world and by working alongside them we can help thousands of people rebuild their lives” said Salam chairman Sharif. H. Banna.
The campaign was launched with a special concert by Maher Zain called Malam Amal Kemanusiaan – Charity Night of Humanity where he performed some of his best loved tracks and raising almost £100,000 in a single night.
“Indonesia is a fantastic country, I always love visiting so being able to give back to the victims of the tsunami means a lot to me” said Maher Zain, the double platinum selling nasheed artist.
Five months on and people are still struggling to bring back a little normality into their lives, but the people of Palu have shown a level of resilience that has inspired the world. Lazismu and Salam have started rebuilding lives but there is still a long way to go.
