Overview
Every day more than 690 million people around the world go to sleep without eating and 1 in 3 suffer from malnutrition.
No human being should suffer from hunger and malnutrition and Salam Charity is determined to work towards ending food insecurity which has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
We understand that ending hunger is directly linked with improved health, education and livelihood outcomes and therefore we work with vulnerable communities to provide holistic and sustainable solutions whilst meeting their immediate needs.
Our aims
- We actively work towards ending extreme poverty in the countries in which we operate in through not only short-term food supplies but also long-term initiatives which pull people out of the cycle of poverty.
- Our aim is to encourage local level ownership of our projects and encourage beneficiary participation in the planning and design phases to ensure this happens.
- We also aim to provide sustainable means of obtaining regular, sufficient and nutritious food which is culturally relevant and gives those who we target, a greater choice over what they eat.
Case Study
During Salam Charity’s winter response, food packs were distributed across several countries including Yemen, Lebanon and Pakistan.
Yemen is one of the poorest countries in the world and has been devastated by conflict over the last 5 years which together with the COVID-19 pandemic has led to 80% of the population requiring humanitarian aid.
Salam Charity delivered food assistance during winter 2021 to vulnerable households in Sana’a, Dhamar and Amran governates in mostly rural and mountainous areas. Target beneficiaries included female-led households, households with elderly or disabled occupants and IDP’s living in informal settlements. A total of 426 vulnerable beneficiaries were provided with sufficient food to last the winter period.
These packs are adapted to suit the needs of beneficiaries depending on location, type of emergency and weather conditions. Packs generally consist of staple food products and essentials including rice, flour, sugar and oil.
In accordance with Islamic requirements, during the month of Dhul Hijjah, qurbani is distributed amongst the poor and vulnerable.
As a long-term project, this would provide thousands of individuals with daily bread and also provide a source of income for local workers.
Salam Charity provides winter homeless kits to rough-sleepers here in the UK each winter which includes essential food supplies which ensure they are able to maintain an adequate calorie intake.
